Scope and Contents: This collection contains letters from Dr. Robert W. Withers, a planter from Greene County, Alabama, as well as from relatives of his. Dr. Withers attended Yale and graduated in 1817. He then received his medical degree from what would become the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1819. Once he moved to Alabama, he gave up his medical profession and became a planter as well as raised and sold horses. His son, William, moved to Texas and managed his father's vast land holdings. His journal, contained in this collection, began in May 1866 and continued through March 1899 {some volumes are missing}.
