Scope and Contents of the Materials
This collection contains information from Karl Tyree, Jr., local lawyer and Executive Director of Florence Housing Authority. It includes Florence history through correspondence, newspaper articles, photographs, as well as information on Urban Renewal projects that occurred in Florence. There are also correspondence from Dr. Henry J. Willingham, his grandfather, as well as correspondence from W.C. Handy.
Biographical Note
Karl Tyree, Jr. was born in Florence, Alabama in 1925. His educational background includes Florence State University, Auburn University, and the University of Alabama Law School. He served in World War 2 and recvied the Bronze Star for his courage and aggressiveness during engagements in France and Germnay in 1944 and 1945. He set up his law practice in Florence in 1949 and in 1955, became the Executive Director of Florence Housing Authoriy. He was the grandson of Dr. Henry J. Willingham, president of Florence Normal in the early 1900s.
