Abstract
A native of Florence, Ronnie G. Flippo entered Florence State University in the early 1960s and earned a bachelor's in accounting in 1965. He continued his education at the Univeristy of Alabama, receiving his Masters in Accounting. He became a part-time instructor at his alma mater in 1968. By the early 1970s, his interest in politics began. He successfully ran and was elected to the Alabama House of Representative and served two terms. In 1975, he won a seat in the Alabama Senate. In 1976, Flippo won Alabama's Fifth district seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was elected to the House Way and Means Committee in 1983, becoming the first Alabamian to serve on this panel in over 70 years. He served as chairman of the Committee on Science and Technology's Space Science Subcommittee during the development of the Space Shuttle Columbia. He also chaired the Tennessee Valley Authority Congressional Caucus and was a strong advocate for the TVA's reorganization and modernization. He retired from Congress in 1991 and opened a private management and lobbying firm in Florence.
