Biographical Note
John Baxter was born May 10, 1811 in Longford County, Ireland. Baxter immigrated to the U.S. in July 1836 and lived in Fayetteville, Tennessee. Baxter enlisted to fight in the Second Seminole Indian War. He later married Alison Bolen on October 3, 1843 in Lincoln Country, Tennesse. Baxter then moved to Tuscumbia, Albama and worked as a merchent. His company was called Brady & Baxter. He built a house on East Third Street in the early 1840s. Baxter and his wife had four sons: Edward Carroll Baxter, Thomas Emmett Baxter. John Baxter died in Tuscumbia, Alabama on August 14th, 1874.
