Abstract

Melivn. M. Striplin Jr. was a native of Florence, AL. He attended Florence Normal School and Auburn University. He received a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from Auburn, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma freternity. Striplin joined the Tennessee Valley Authority in 1933. As a project leader and assistant branch chief, he directed many pilot-plant and lagre-scale projects, He retired from TVA after 39 years of service. He wrote multiple papers and publications. His greatest achievement came in the discovery and development of superphosporic acid, which is now used to produce fertilizer around the world. He holds 10 patenst with TVA has granted some 250 licenses. He is listed in American Men of Science, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in Alabama, and Who's Who in Engineering. He was a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and American Chemical Society. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church for over 70 years.

The M.M. Striplin Jr. Scholarchip at the University of North Alabama is awarded to full-time students majoring in Chemistry. Nominees recommended by the Department of Chemistry.
