Abstract

William Henry Mitchell was a Presbyterian preacher in Florence, Alabama during the Civil War. He was arrested by Union soldiers on July 27, 1862. He spent time in jail in Illinois for several months before he was released and permitted to return to Florence.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The William Henry Mitchell First Presbyterian Church Sermons Collection (1833-1870) includes sermons by W.H. Mitchell from 1833-1870.

Biographical Note

William Henry Mitchell was born on Februrary 1, 1921. His great-grandfather pastored the Presbyterian church in Florence in 1843 to 1850.  Mitchell attended school in Florence and later went on to join the army and served in World War 2. Upon returning home after he had finsihed serving he recived his degree in law at the University of Alabama. Afterwards he  returned to Florence to practice law from 1946 to 1958 with his wife Ellie Richardson.

He began working as a banker and by the time he retired the bank he had been working at had grown into the largest independent bank in North Alabama. Mitchell was a member of several clubs and eventually began serving at First Presbyterian Church in Florence as an elder, trustee, and sunday teacher.
